p52 | just getting through it

OK, so the last two weeks haven't exactly been all that inspiring. I feel like all I've done is going through the motions ... getting up in the morning, going to work, coming home, doing the must dos and then collapsing on the sofa, feeling completely drained. So with that in mind, I can honestly say that my picture taking hasn't been so very inspiring either.

I think I have shared pictures before from the park right next to my workplace? Here are two weeks' worth of park photos. I've taken short walks during my lunch break, on days when I've been able to squeeze a break in, to breathe and focus on other things than deadlines and documents. These walks, despite the weather being far from what I would want, are like little glittering gems in long days filled with stress. So even though the pictures might not be masterpieces, they still represent something worthwhile in my life.

We are slowly working our way towards spring here. It's not cold any longer but the ice in the water is trying its best to linger around. I liked the way the trees were reflected in the slightly slushy ice.

Shooting this one, I had my heart beating out of my chest. There was another goose standing next to this one, and neither of them took a liking to me. The geese in the parks are quite agressive and have been known to attack people walking by. So sitting down right next to them was a bit of a chance taking on my part and I was fully ready to run for my life. It all ended well, though, as I knew when it was time to slowly back away and leave them alone. LOL, who said city life isn't dangerous?

laying it out | little monkey

I had a revelation last night. I miss scrapping. I don't do it often enough. I should change that.
At least I got a headstart with this one!

sweet treat on fat tuesday

I don't eat all that many cakes. I love to bake, but since I try to stay away from the stuff, that doesn't happen all too often either.

But there are a few times every now and then where I indulge. Today is a day like that. Today is fat Tuesday, and that means a special sweet treat in our parts of the world; a cardamom bun with marzipan and whipped cream, topped with a dusting of icing sugar.

They are quite lovely with the combination of the spicy bun, the sweet marzipan, and the fluffy cream. We settle for one a year, for tradition's sake, but people must be going crazy for them because they show up in the shops and bakeries right after Christmas.

I haven't been able to find a recipe in English, but with a little help of Google Translate I think most will be pretty clear. So, here's the recipe!

Disclaimer 1:
I bought mine in a bakery though, no time for baking when you leave work at five ...

Disclaimer 2:
There's a lot of noice in the picture, I know, but again, when you leave work at five there aren't many minutes left of daylight once you get around to eating the damn thing.

new in store | it's a start

Yay! SO excited for the huge template set I have for you today!

I really wanted to create an album set for telling the story of our latest trip to Italy - our 10 year anniversary trip. I wanted a simple and classy style with a bit of an edge. Now, I still haven't had time to sit down and actually create my own album, but I am so happy with how the templates turned out.

It'sastart8
(Click on the image to go directly to the product in the shop)

There are a whopping 20 templates in the set. They all feature two papers and custom shadows. This means you can choose to just plop your pictures in, write you titles and journaling, and you are done! But then you could also change the papers out, add all the elements you want, and you've got a fully customized look. With so many templates, you will be able to create an album any size - just mix and match until you have as many pages as you need.

It's a Start Templates 8 is available in my shop at JessicaSprague.com today, and at 25% off today only!

p52 | crisp

So they say that spring is coming. Well, I haven't noticed. We've had snow all weekend and the cold is still lingering. That's all fine and dandy if one can stay inside and not deal with traffic, or bundling up in five layers of clothes, or shoveling. On the other hand, it does give some amazing opportunities once in a while. Like when I noticed that the trees outside our house looked all fluffy. I quickly grabbed the camera, stepped in my wellies, and ran outside to snap. Nature simply amazes me!

Still, I wish spring would come sooner rather than later!

sharing some goodness | lightscoop

A while back Benita of chezlarsson.com shared a post about a neat little gadget that she had come across. It had me curious and so I checked out the website of the thing. Score! Lightscoop is a fabulous idea!

Now Lightscoop is a mirror that is placed over the in-camera flash to direct the light and bounce it off the ceiling or a wall instead of attacking the object of the photo with evil, harsh light. So, basically it's a low tech way of doing what external flashes essentially do. Now of course the external flashes, and especially the more expensive ones, have other functions that obviously a plastic gadget with a mirror doesn't. But I say it's a great idea for a lot less money.

(image from lightscoop.com)

They had a discount running when I checked it out so I went ahead and ordered one. It arrived this week, and I can absolutely see myself taking a lot more indoor photos after 3pm, which is basically when it gets dark here in the winter, from now on.

Let me share with you two quick comparison images that I snapped just for this post.
(Please ignore the fact that these are SOOC, I was too lazy to spend any time editing at all, LOL).

Regular horrible flash photo of a lamp in our house with that evil, harsh glare and bad colour.

Much more agreeable photo of the same lamp with a warmer colour, and no evil, harsh glare. And no bad, bad shadowing!

And another one ...
Regular horrible flash photo of a concrete rose in our home with that evil, harsh glare and bad colour.

Much more agreeable photo of the same rose without the evil, harsh glare and much less shadowing, despited being straight under the light fixture that hangs over our kitchen island.

I have to say, I'm a fan!

walking on water | an icy cold photo shoot

So I shared a photo on Sunday for my P52 photo of the week of us walking on the frozen sea on the beach. I'd like to share a few more shots. I don't have too many. It was so cold that my fingers were ready to fall off after about five minutes. But I really like the texture of the ice in some of the shots. So now that I am sitting in the comfort of my sofa (with a blanket covering my legs and sporting a big wooly cardigan) I can say it was worth it.

This last one is proof that people are crazy. That's a hole someone made to actually jump in! Crazy, I tell you!

custom alphabet poster | take two

I finished the second comission for an alphabet poster over the weekend and got a positive response yesterday. This one asked for black and grey on white, with a slight romantic feel. Here is the result.

The client asked me to make it big so that she could have it printed as a really huge poster. I think it's going to look smashing.

p52 | winter weeks

Confession time. I missed last week of P52. I didn't take one single photo with my "real" camera last week. I have to admit I am ashamed and sad. But I guess the reality of life sometimes means that you  have to give up on aspirations and determinations. In the long run, it's not going to matter all too much. It's not like there were life changing stuff going on. Other than glasses breaking, and washing machine going on strike. Not photo op stuff really.

So what to do? Take two this week. And I got them in by the skin of my teeth, as I took them both today. LOL!

A close up of the wall decor in the entry that I put up last night.  Forgive me for being smitten!

Winter decided to show up in the end in our part of the world. Not that I'm all that excited. I hate being cold, and I hate shoveling show. But I guess I have to agree with the notion that it means a good opportunity for some gorgeous shots. Here we were walking on the ice out at the beach. Only thing that bugs me is my shadow at the bottom of the shot.

I took a bunch of shots today, to the point of my fingers being ready to fall off. I will share some more of them in a couple of days.
