hybrid | handmade christmas gifts

So I took this class on JessicaSprague.com that had me super inspired to bust out the glue and actually make something tangible for once. It was the Mouse, Paper, Scissors Give class that Jessica team taught with Heidi Swapp. The class objective was to create hybrid gifts, just in time for the holidays.

The first gift I made was a calendar for my mother. She has been asking me for years to make her one with my photos, and I have honestly dreaded it a little because I think the calendars you order from online photo sites are dead boring. But Jessica and Heidi got me excited again. Now, their style is a bit (ok, a lot) more frilly and elaborate than mine and my mother's, but that wasn't a problem at all. I just adjusted to fit and it was a done deal.

The calendar is like a book that holds not only a calendar for each month but also a note pad and pen.

For this project I used digital papers from my Get Happy Paper Pack as well as some Bazzil cardstock, and my Almanac Template Pack. The book thingy was included in the class kit, but could easily be recreated. I also used a clip to hold the calendar sheets, and a notepad that I had in my stash.

The second gift was a little tin of "to do" help for my sister.
(Please excuse the lack of quality in these photos, they were taken at 6.30 am the day there were to be given, and there was very little light at that time)

Now this project was super easy to create. I designed a cover for the tin with paper from the Moments Paper Pack and some brushes and fonts, and for the inside lid with paper from the Valpoicella Paper Pack. I also made some notecards, and lastly created magnets by gluing designed cirlces using the same papers, brushes and fonts and then attaching the magnets on the back. After that I simply added a small pen and the project was finished. I have to say, I like hybrid when the bulk of the work is done digitally! Hee!

The third gift was supposed to be something entirely different, but I had a glue meltdown (pun intended) and had to switch gears. For my other sister I created a subway style poster that I framed.
(This photo was also taken that early morning, so again, please excuse the bad photo)

The poster features the places and dates where and when my sister and her boyfriend were born, met, got engaged, and now live. I love, love, love how this turned out. And it was so easy to make as well. Want to make one of your own? Jessica and Heidi has made a little mini class for this one that is available right now. Check it out! The frame, if you are interested is from IKEA - where else?

So that was the extent of my craftiness this Christmas, not counting spending about two weeks on wrapping all the gifts. Perhaps next year if I start a little earlier I will be able to do more?

Oh who am I kidding?

photo class feedback

I had my second photography class this week and for this time we had a new assignment. We were all supposed to take photos at the same place in our city; a large and busy square in the centre. Now those kinds of assignments always make me really nervous, simply because my performance anxiety kicks in high gear and tells me I need to be perfect to measure up to everyone else. I worked through those initial feelings of despair and got on with the assignment as soon as I could.
I ended up bringing six photographs to class on Tuesday. Squares are difficult to shoot because of the open space and abundance of details all over. Taking panoramic photos will likely end up with a busy result and a photography lacking of a specific focus. My solution to that? Shooting details of course. Cop out you say? Yeah, me too! LOL!

Feedback: The colours are nice and the contrast of the leaves agains the gravel leads you into the image. The focus is at the right place. I should have cut out the tree and the green at the top of the image as it distracts the eye.

Feedback: This image doesn't work because it is impossible to understand what the saying is about. The roundness of the IRL globe is lost and the image seems flat. Also, the last part of the last word is out of focus and I should have used a smaller aperture.

Feedback: This is a really good image and the large aperture means that the little devil is the perfect focal point with very little distraction from the background. The composition is good.

Feedback: Interesting composition but the blue bike on the far right is a bit distracting. I couldn't have cut it out though because that would have meant that the red light would be too far towards the edge. The focus is nice on the rusty frame.

Feedback: Good composition and a good idea to not include their heads. That means the viewer starts thinking about who these guys are and what they are doing and talking about. Perhaps I should have cut out some of the stones at the bottom as the rest of the image is so tightly cut around the three guys. Good decision to make it a b/w image.

Feedback: This image should have been shot from straight ahead (which I actually wanted but was afraid to do since they played for money and I had no cash). The girl is the weakest point in the image as she is looking away and her hands aren't showing that she is playing the drum. The face of the male is nicely lit though.

So there you have it. Not all bad but not raving reviews either. I didn't expect that though and I love hearing what professionals, and other enthusiasts, have to say and how they can help me. The fun thing about this assignment was to see how differently everyone had gone about it and what different styles there were in all the photographs. I am so glad I was able to join this group.

The assignment for next week is to shoot something that sparks great emotion. Haven't got that down yet. :o

Real life card making

It's been a long time since I created a card the old fashioned way with papers and scissors and glue and all that. I think digi has made me lazy with the snazzy control clicks and the convenient do overs. Doing it the digi way is quick and easy and the results are always perfect - no glue smudges, no wrong cuts, no wonky placements.

But my fingers were itching to make some mess this morning and with beautiful inspiration the from Mouse, Paper, Scissors Mom class at Jessica Sprague.com, by Jessica and Heidi Swapp, I went to town on the papers and glues. It gave me a few of hours of mental therapy where nothing but cutting, folding, glueing, and glittering mattered. It was quite liberating and something I highly recommend.

I made a card for my goddaughter's birthday. It's very girly and pink, which is perfect for her as she is the epitome of a little princess. The more pink and glitter the better. So I think this card did the trick. I love the outcome.

Supplies: The beautiful papers are from the Gabrielle line by Bo Bunny and they are included in the class.
I printed the card pages on heavy textured cardstock and all tags, flags, and butterflies on satin photo paper. I used Chandelier Glam glitter paint by Tattered Angels to get the sparkle. For the finishing effect I used adhesive stones and a glittery brad from my local craft store.  I used Sloop Script and VT Portable Remington fonts.

Taking the cake

I enrolled in Jessica Sprague's newest class, Digi in Deeper, and I'm finding it very inspirational. This week it's all about graphic and grungy scrapbooking styles. The first lesson inspired me to start working on a project that I've been putting off for the longest time. I hope I can share it real soon. The sketch for the second lesson inspired me in a huge way to scrap. Here's what I created with the sketch

Type+Writer 2 class

During the last two weeks I have been taking the Type+Writer 2 class at jessicasprague.com where Jessica has teamed up with Liv Esteban to create a banging follow up to their fist class that they presented for the first time last year. It has been two weeks of soul searching and introspective digging as well as some great design moments, and chuckles at myself.

I created five layouts for class.

Adventure
The assignment was to write about a trip we had taken in the past and to focus on sensory memories. I wrote about our first day in NYC in 2003.

Change
Totally being silly with this one; we were supposed to use photos of ourselves as teenagers and now and then write about differences and likenesses but as I don't have a scanner I had to find a different approach.

One Week
The assignment was to take photos and write short paragraphs about each day of the first week and then to use all of them in one layout. It's been a while since I took a photo every day of a week but I quite like the outcome.

Bulletin board
This last assignment was to write poetry and topic was something we have learned about life. For me it was easy to find that I wanted to write about the biggest lesson I have learned; about accepting that life doesn't always turn out as planned and moving on.

It's been an intense two weeks but it has given me so much to think about and so many new writing techniques. I also really dig the design work that came out of the class. If you have the chance to take this class in the future then do! You won't be sorry.

A sign of life

It's about time we get a little colourful in here don't you think? I've had a busy couple of weeks with work, class, and well, life really. I know you all know what that is like.

The Type+Writer class at Jessica Sprague's finished on Sunday. Due to logistics issues I have not completed the class just yet but here are four of the six class layouts.

In this class we did a lot of writing. Every day there was a 15 minute free write exercise and every other day a writing assignment for the layouts we did on the non writing days. Most of the writing prompts were introspective and soul searching which gave for some quite personal layouts. If anyone is interested in reading what I actually wrote just give me a yelling.

I have been working on some paper projects lately and tomorrow I am starting a big job for a New Years Eve birthday party. Invites have to go out before the end of the month.
